Swedish vs. Deep Tissue: Which Massage Is Right for You?

Not sure whether to book a Swedish or deep tissue massage? We break down the differences in pressure, purpose, and who each suits best.

One of the most common questions we hear at Massage Refresh is: should I book a Swedish or a deep tissue massage? The answer depends on what your body needs.

Swedish massage uses light to medium pressure with long, gliding strokes. It’s designed for relaxation, stress relief, and improved circulation — ideal for first-time clients or anyone carrying everyday tension.

Deep tissue massage uses firmer, slower pressure to reach deeper muscle layers and connective tissue. It’s best for chronic pain, stubborn knots, and recovery from physical strain.

A simple rule of thumb: if you want to unwind and de-stress, choose Swedish. If you have a specific problem area that needs focused work, choose deep tissue.
